How To Search Johnson County Arrest Records & Mugshots for Free

If you want to search for Johnson County arrest records, you can do so with either the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office or through local police departments.1

If you are looking to perform the broadest search possible of public records in Johnson County, then you can start by searching arrest information at the county level with the sheriff’s office. Using their online search tool, you will be able to get information about people arrested and incarcerated in their Johnson County Jail.

If you need a recent arrest report, then another option is to inquire with local police departments in Johnson County. This is a great option if you know the arresting agency or the general location of where the incident occurred.

If you need police reports or related information for submitting a claim or some other legal reason, this is your best option. This may also be your best option if the person was recently arrested and you need the information immediately.

Regardless of a person’s reasons, below are tools and resources for searching arrest records with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and local police departments.

Find Out if Someone Is in Jail via the Johnson County Sheriff Office’s Inmate Roster

The most efficient option for searching Johnson County bookings is to use the Sheriff’s Office online jail roster search tool.

This online tool limits searchers to a person’s first and last name and will only provide results for an exact match. In addition, you have to include both the person’s first and last name to perform a search.

Once you perform this free public records search, if there are any applicable jail records, you can view the person’s name, Sheriff’s Office Number, sex and race. To find someone’s mugshot and additional information, you can click on an arrestee’s name.

A screenshot shows the inmate's details from the Johnson County Sheriff's Office website, including the full name, race, sex, height, weight, SO number, location, mugshot and charge.
Source: Johnson County Sheriff’s Office2

Once you click on an arrest record, in addition to a mugshot, you can view descriptive information about the person, including their height, weight and where they are currently incarcerated (if applicable).

Also, this search tool will provide you with information on the charges brought against a person. This includes a description of the charge, the date they were arrested and the arresting agency. In this section, you can also view bond information, including the type of bond (e.g., surety) and the bond amount.

Note: While arrest and jail information may be incomplete, more information can be obtained by searching public criminal records, which will be discussed later in this article.

In addition to searching their public records repository, you can also find out if someone is in jail by contacting the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office. You can email them at [email protected] or call their main office number at 817-556-6058. If you would like to talk to someone in person, you can go to the below address:

Also, you may need information from a local police department to make sure you have the correct information about a person who was incarcerated in the Johnson County Jail. As discussed earlier, the Johnson County inmate search tool only provides results for an exact name match.

How To Check Criminal Cases in Johnson County Texas

Individuals have the right to search Johnson County public records to see if someone has a criminal record. In contrast with arrest records, criminal records contain the full adjudication of charges brought against a person.

There is plenty of useful information a person can gather from a criminal record. They can use it to get information on the next court date for an ongoing criminal case. It can also be used to find what type of sentence a person served for a crime, whether that be probation or prison time.

Criminal records can also be used for targeted searches such as a warrant search or to check and see if someone is a registered sex offender.

Below is information on how to search Johnson County judicial records and more for criminal information. There is also information on how to find specific criminal information that people often search for.

Find Johnson County Criminal Charges Through the Court Records Inquiry Search Tool

To conduct a free criminal record check in Johnson County, you can use their online Criminal Court Records Inquiry Search Tool. This tool can be used to look up someone’s criminal record and find detailed information surrounding any cases brought against them.

A screenshot of the Criminal Records Inquiry Page for the search of cases filed within Johnson County Courts displays four options to search, such as by case, defendant, citation and attorney; to search by defendant, users are required to input the subject's last name.
Source: Johnson County Courts4

A searcher can use this tool to search for records at either the county or district level. Depending on the information a person has, they can choose to search by the Defendant’s name, the case number or citation. If you only know the person’s attorney, you can search by their name as well.

If you are performing a name search, the most common option, you can also include a person’s date of birth if available. Depending on whether you are specifically looking for an ongoing case or past criminal record, you can choose to search for either open or closed criminal records. Finally, include a date range for when the criminal case was filed to further narrow down your results.

The search results provide a snapshot of all matching criminal records. Here, you can see the case number, citation number (if applicable), name, court and filed date. You can also see the type of criminal record and current status.

To access a person’s complete criminal record, you can click on the case number on the far left-hand side. The complete criminal record will start off by providing any related cases. This is a great resource to make sure you are aware of all criminal records related to a particular person or event.

You can also view the specific charge information brought against a person. This section includes a brief description of the charge, the relevant Texas criminal statute as well as the level of the offense.

Another important section of the criminal record is the Events & Orders of the Court. This section is divided into “Dispositions” and “Other Events and Hearings.” The “Dispositions” section will provide the major events of a case, including the case’s verdict and sentence.

The “Other Events and Hearings” section lists every single event that happened in a case in chronological order.

There is also a final section on financial information that provides any fees or fines the Defendant has paid or are due.

Search Criminal Records in Johnson County Texas at the County & District Courts

You can also perform a Johnson County case search in person for criminal records. Criminal cases are tried both in their County Court and District Court.

County criminal cases involve misdemeanor cases. Misdemeanors are minor criminal offenses such as trespass, shoplifting and similar crimes that typically carry probation sentences and fines.

District courts have jurisdiction over more serious criminal cases referred to as felonies. These cases involve acts of violence, and a conviction results in mandatory prison time. Examples of felonies include murder, armed robbery, rape and more.

For criminal matters with the District Court, you can contact them at 817-556-6870. The County Court criminal section can be reached at 817-556-6323 (Ext. 1323). It may be helpful to contact them by phone first for any questions about accessing their criminal records.

The Guinn Justice Center is the home for both the County and District Courts. You can visit them in person at the below address:

Guinn Justice Center
204 S. Buffalo Avenue, Ste. 304
Cleburne, Texas 76033

Tip: It is often helpful to contact the Clerk of Court for information on searching their criminal records. You can call them at 817-556-6323. You can also email them for public information requests at [email protected]

How To Look Up Arrest Warrants in Johnson County Texas

To search for Johnson County warrants, you can use the Criminal Court Records Inquiry Search Tool. This is your best option, as Johnson County does not provide a search tool dedicated solely to individuals with warrants. To determine if someone has a warrant, you can perform a criminal record search of the person you want to inquire about.

Once you click on the complete criminal record, scroll to the “Events & Orders of the Court” section. This section contains any case dispositions as well as a chronological listing of every event and hearing that occurred for the particular criminal case.

Search through each listed event to see if any warrants were issued. To speed up your search, you have the option of performing a search and find (Select “Ctrl+F”) to see if the word “warrant” is listed anywhere in the criminal record.

You can also call the Clerk of Court at 817-556-6323 or the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office at 817-556-6058 to see if they have any information about individuals with warrants.

A screenshot of the active warrants list from the Cleburne Municipal Court page, including offender information such as full name and bail amount.

Some cities will provide their own warrant information. This is the case in Johnson County’s largest city, Cleburne, where you can view warrant information on their Active Warrant List.5 To confirm this information is accurate, you can contact the Cleburne Municipal Court by phone at 817-645-0925.

How To Track Down Johnson County Probation Records

You can check public records for probation information by using the Criminal Court Records Inquiry Search Tool. To narrow down your search, on the home screen, select County Courts. County Courts handle misdemeanor cases, which most often lead to probation.

The District Court, which is responsible for felony cases, imposes prison sentences, which may eventually lead to parole.

The starting point is to follow the previously provided instructions for performing a criminal record search. Similar to warrants, you can find probation information in the “Other Events and Hearings” section.

If a person was sentenced to probation, you will have to look through each event to find out when they were sentenced. It will not indicate how long they were on probation. However, if they have completed their probation, there will be another event listed in which the person was discharged from probation.

If you do not see this, the person is likely still under probation in Johnson County.

Another option for additional probation information is to contact the Johnson County probation department at one of their two adult probation locations. They may be able to assist you with additional information on probation records in Johnson County.

How To Perform a Johnson County Background Check for Any Reason

A background check report can be conducted for many different reasons. If you just want to learn more about your own criminal record or informally gather information on someone else, you can perform a personal background check.

To perform a personal background check varies depending on the type of information you are looking for and the record custodian. Some of the documents you may want to search are accessible through online search tools. Sometimes, however, you will have to look for records in person.

Depending on the record and custodian, you may even have to submit a public records request before accessing the information you are seeking.

Personal background checks are informal, and for Johnson County, you can follow the steps already outlined in this article for conducting one.

A professional background check is a more formal process. Professional background checks are usually requested as a result of specific state statutes, situations or requests. For instance, a landlord may request a professional background check to ensure that the information provided by a tenant is accurate.

Or, an employer may be required to perform annual background checks for their employees working with children or the elderly.

These are just a couple of many examples. To request a background check in Johnson County, you will have to do so through the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). While the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office provides the option to make a public information request, they do not provide background check reports.

Through the Texas DPS, you can perform an online criminal history conviction background check.6 This background check request will provide you information on any convictions a person has that were reported to them, as well as any deferred adjudications. Information included in this background check report includes arrests, prosecutions and the disposition of a case (for class B misdemeanors and greater offenses).

The cost of a criminal background check with the Texas DPS is $3.00. Utilizing resources earlier in this article can be helpful in successfully requesting a background check report with the Texas DPS. Make sure you provide them with as much information as possible, including their full name (a middle name or maiden name can be included if applicable) and date of birth.

For any questions about the background check process, you can view the Texas DPS’s FAQ page. If you still have questions, you can contact them by phone at 855-481-7070. If you would like to talk to someone in person, you can go to the below address:

Texas Department of Public Safety
Criminal Investigations Division
6100 Guadalupe, Building E
Austin, Texas 78752

The Texas DPS also provides fingerprinting services. Fingerprint-based background checks may be required in a variety of situations, such as employment and licensing requirements. If you have a need for fingerprinting services or have questions related to this process, you can email the Texas DPS Fingerprint Services Unit by email at [email protected].

Another option for a Texas background check is through the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS).7 The Texas DFPS provides both background checks as well as investigations to determine if a person has committed any acts of neglect or abuse. This can be important, for instance, in cases where a person wants to volunteer or work with children or the elderly.

To make a request through the Texas DFPS, you can complete and notarize their Request for Child Abuse Neglect Central Registry Check Form (in PDF form at the above link). This form can be faxed to512-339-5829 or emailed to [email protected]. You can also mail this form to the below address:

DFPS Background Checks
M/C 4111, P.O. Box 149030
Austin, Texas 78714

Any person can request a criminal background check through the Texas DFPS. If you have additional questions, you can email them at the above email address or call them at 512-929-6900.

Citizens’ Rights & Responsibilities Pertaining to Johnson County Public Records

Before you start performing public records searches in Johnson County, it’s important to understand how to be responsible with these documents. The goal of this article is to teach you how to find records efficiently and use them ethically.

Your responsibilities will depend on how you want to use these records: professionally or personally. As mentioned earlier, professional use of public records is tied to specific actions such as state compliance, licenses, employment and more.

When records are being used for professional use, before you take any action, make sure you get the written consent of the person you are searching. Also, if you use a person’s public records against them, make sure you send them the required adverse action notices. Failure to take either of these actions can result in being reported to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).17

Also, be careful how you use this information. If a person is discriminated against because of information in their public records, you may be subject to a complaint filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).18 Complaints for discrimination can be filed using their online portal.

Finally, for professional use of consumer information, it is important to familiarize yourself with the rights afforded by the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).19

Personal use does not have the same stringent requirements. If you are using the records without any specific purposes beyond learning more about a person, you have only one primary restriction. That restriction is that you cannot use public records for criminal conduct. For example, if you find someone’s property address through public records, stalking them at their home would be an example of an action you cannot take with public records.

A major benefit of personal use is that you do not have to ask for the person’s consent to perform a public records search. Just make sure that the use of the record is not for professional purposes.

For public records that do not show up in an online or in-person search, you have the right to submit a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. A FOIA request can be used to request, for instance, a city’s council meeting minutes and other types of records you cannot readily access.

After reading this article, you now have the skills to search Johnson County public records and the understanding of how to use them in a legal and ethical manner.
